Abstract: | Aim is to identify lexical items that have been borrowed into the Temne language from the neighbouring Mende, and to examine the semantic and cultural significance of such loanwords within the Temne lexicon. A major section of the paper is devoted to a study of the semantic categories to which the Mende loanwords may be assigned, together with a discussion on their cultural and historical implications.
