Abstract: | The term 'adoptive is' used here to refer to words introduced into a language as a result of linguistic borrowing from another. In other studies adoptives are referred to as 'loans'. This study of Zulu adoptives is limited to those forms that derive from English and Afrikaans, the two main languages with which Zulu has been in contact since the arrival of whites in Natal and Zululand. A further restriction is that the forms of adoptives selected for study are those introduced at what is generally referred to as the 'pre-bilingual' period. In the present case, this is the period before the Zulus has access to the phonology and phonetics of the donor languages. For the early period no evidence of importation (as defined by Einar Haugen) is found in Zulu adoptives from English and Afrikaans. There is, however, abounding evidence of different types of substitution. Before dealing with these, two major adjustments that take place in adoptives are considered: the first is suprasegmental adjustment, the second are syllable structure adjustments. - Bibliogr., notes. |
