Abstract:The present essay is a summary of observations made by the writer while going through Hannan's Standard Shona Dictionary (Salisbury, 1974) as part of an attempt to build up a corpus of 'acceptable' loanwords in Shona. The writer found that in addition to the conmon problem of establishing criteria for the acceptability of foreign words, a little-studied, little-standardised and little-modernised language like Shona presents other problems for the lexicographer: dialectal selection, choice of a suitable format for the dictionary, and considerations regarding its relative usefulness to first and second-language speakers respectively.
