Abstract:The problem parallel to the problem of transliterating Amharic words for speakers of English and other languages is the reverse process, that of transliterating foreign words into Amharic, e.g. in the daily newspapers. Three criteria are desirable in such transliterations: consistency, phonetic fidelity. orthographic fidelity. Examples are presented of problems in transliteration to make it clear that decisions regarding solution could be assisted by examining the nature of the phonological and orthographical systems in question: Multiple values of English letters; 'Silent letters'; Ambiguity of the 6th order vowel; Ambiguity because of differences in the phonologies or orthographies of the languages involved; Abbreviations and use of initials in acronyms; Problem of choosing between pronunciations of words spelled the same but pronounced differently in several source languages. Appendix: brief description of the Ethiopian writing system. Ref.
