Abstract:Considerations on the economic aspect of language. Language is as much a factor of production as land, labour and capital and as such, should be included in any development strategy. Brief historical sketch of the economic role of language in East Africa in the pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial situation. Concludes that the influence of language on man-power resources should be considered in terms of economy and any investment into language improves the value of human resources. The usage of several languages within one community is uneconomical. Moreover, the transformation of a multilingual society into a united one in respect of language means national self-reliance.
