Title:Traditions and creativity: an analysis of the Liberian mask collection in the Hungarian Ethnographic Museum
Author:Borsányi, László
Book title:Folklore in Africa today = Folklore en Afrique d'aujourd'hui
Year:1984
Pages:361-386
Language:English
Geographic term:Liberia
Subject:masks
Abstract:In order to describe the 129 masks of the Rudolf FUSZEK collection the author developed a method of analysis which reduces its diversity to a numerical formula, an approach useful also for the analysis of other ethnographic categories and cultural institutions. He also developed a method, patterned upon this formula, for grouping detailed characteristics which at the same time serves as a controlled comparison. Since each artifact is a manifestation of artistic creativity, this controlled comparison provides a clear picture of the range of this creativity in time and space and for a given form and content.
