Abstract: | This study deals with the political implications of the so-called 'Elmina note'. Different explications of this 'kostbrief', as it was called by the Dutch, gave rise to difficulties during the negotiations between Great Britain and the Netherlands with regard to the cession of the Dutch possessions on the coast. These negotiations provoked a sharp reaction from Kofi Kankari, King of Ashanti, who protested strongly against a transfer of Elmina to the British, arguing, on the basis of the 'Elmina note', that Elmina was his by right. This was rejected by governor Nagtglas. Whereupon a 'certificate of Apologie' was presented to the Dutch. The dubious role of Plange and further sequences of the certificate are also examined in this study. Bibliography. |
