Abstract: | There are two kinds of evidence about ancient Ghana: I The works of Arabic authord who a) lived during or shortly after the time of Ghana's greatness, bur who were strangers to the western Sudan in which Ghana was situated; b) lived after Ghana had vanished from the political scene, but who were themselves natives of the Sudan and so had access to the oral tradition about Ghana which was current during their lifetime. II In addition to the written evidence, which dates effectively from the eighth to the seventeenth centuries, here is the evidence resulting the present century. This article reviews the accounts of the several authors which refer to Ghana, with some short instances of their reports. Bibliographical references. |
