Abstract:Examination of the results of military contact by the Njelu and Mshope Ngoni with their neighbours in Southern East Africa in the period from the early 1860s to the late 1890s. Particular attention is paid to identifying and analysing the consequences of contact suffered by specific groups, and the changes which took place on the political, military, economic and social levels, both among those societies which resisted, and those which submitted to the Ngoni. Notes, maps.
