| Abstract: | There is a growing impatience among many analysts to herald the passing of the importance of urban-rural ties because urbanization in Subsaharan Africa will have reached some later stage. However, the question of urban-rural ties, their nature and operation, continues to deserve empirical monitoring as well as theoretical attention. focusing on West Africa, the A's establish a more solid basis for future research by reviewing the evidence available to date, offering their interpretation of the observed pattern, exploring the prospects for a rupture of the urban-rural connection, and briefly outlining major implications.
