Abstract:In the 1930's the British colonial government was involved in a massive operation in Kigoma region to bring people into settlements known as 'concentrations'. In the 1970's the Tanzanian government is involved in another massive operation to bring people into settlements known as 'ujamaa villages'. Is the latter merely a repetition of the former? Brief comparative examination of sereral aspects of the two operations, notably their respective purposes, planning, magnitude, methods, and material support, in order to provide empirical evidence which may help to answer the question. Notes. Critical commentary by Rweikiza BAGUMA appears in: Taamuli, 7 (1977), 1, p. 31-36.
