Abstract: | The hydroelectric dams at the Volta lake (Ghana) and the Kainji lake (Nigeria) were both constructed in the 1960s and experienced similar problems of resettlement. The resettlement policies and procedures adopted were however different, and studies conducted some ten years after they had been built clearly showed that these differences resulted in the differences in the patterns of adjustment of the resettled people. The Kainji scheme had more people with positive adjustment scores than the Volta scheme, and therefore the Kainji scheme, with less problems, is worth recommending, if properly modified. Notes, ref. |
