Abstract: | The Oral Documentation Project, a research programme of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, makes use of individual biographies of ordinary black South Africans. Starting from a sub-project (the lives and experiences of black South African women in the Transvaal countryside), this paper sets out, not only what some of the aims and ideals are of using individual biographies, but also how difficult and important it is to ensure that biographies are more than anecdotal in their use by the researcher, and that a materialist perspective be retained. |
