Abstract: | Poverty, in part as a result of lack of economic self-sufficiency, has been recognized as one of the key impediments in the empowerment of women in Africa. Although NGOs have been frequently criticized, they have more often played a facilitating and leadership role as catalysts in empowerment and development with regard to the socioeconomic needs of women in poverty. Zimbabwe Women Finance Trust (ZWFT), which opened in Harare in 1985 as a microcredit programme, provides financial assistance and incentives in the form of loans to women entrepreneurs who are denied access to credit by the formal banking sector. The goal is to expand women's opportunities through the promotion of access to and participation in economic processes and, thereby, larger social structures. The article includes a typical interview scenario, in which a prospective borrower requests assistance, followed by the author's analysis and commentary. Bibliogr., sum. |
