Abstract:Since Hornell wrote his historic account of sea trade in the Indian Ocean from Egyptian and Sumerian times to the coming of the Chinese traffic. Various vital facts have come to light which are important for South African Late Stone Age history. This subject is dealt with by the author as follows: Early historically recorded shipping the red ocean, or Ocean of the Red Men; The oceanic incense and spice route; The Trans-oceanic timber route; The antiquity of the lndian-Indonesian route.
