Abstract:Although the Algerian natural gas industry has so far made only limited export sales, its potential is considerable in view of its gas reserves, infrastructural developments, and contracts agreed or under negotiation. Initial developments in the early 1960s were followed by a hiatus, partly of Algeria' s own making, but increased global energy demands have produced contracts and initiated investment which should make Algeria a major exporter of gas in the early 1980s. By then depletion rates will become important and the necessity of ensuring long term economic development from this resource endowment will arise. Graph., map, ref., tab.
