Abstract: | The second half of the 15th century and the whole of the century that followed witnessed the rise and collapse of several states. The dynastic chronologies of these Central Sudan states have remained very much in dispute. The purpose of this paper is to use the fixed points or fixed periods known to us from sources outside the area, or internal cross-checking, to establish working chronologies for these states in the 16th century. The states the article is concerned with are Air, Katsina, Kano, Kebbi and Bornu. Of each state the author sums up sources and critical studies. Ref., tables. |
