Abstract:This study considers the mineral industry in Tanzania, its nature and similarities with other industries, the importance of the mining industry to the economy, the degree of foreign involvement before and after independence, and the government's efforts to develop the sector through industrialization. Problems facing the mining sector are the lack of modern prospecting, skilled personnel, and infrastructure; the limited quantity of certain minerals, especially metallic deposits, which makes them 'uneconomic'; and the dependence on world market conditions.
