Abstract:Exploration of some aspects of the political economy of Islam in the context of Islamic identity in sub-Saharan Africa. The author first reviews the main similarities and differences in Islam's basic cosmological assumptions and those of its indigenous predecessors and rivals. This is followed by an examination of how economic and political factors affect the decision to adopt Islam and its corresponding political and economic implications. Bibliogr.
