| Abstract: | The authors begin with a critical examination of the work of Henry Bernstein who put foreward as a central question to be investigated the previously largely unacknowledged struggle between State and peasantry under 'African socialism'. The wider objective of this chapter is to address in a new light some of the problems examined in the existing literature, including that of the nature and causes of the contradiction between peasants and State.
