| Abstract: | A description of the 'houses of women' in Katsina, a Hausa city in northern Nigeria. These accomodate Kuruwai, courtisanes, other independent women and marginal, homosexual or bisexual men. These women differ from the rest of Hausa womenkind in that they do not live with kin and that they are financially autonomous. There status is not necessarily permanent but may alternate with periods of secluded marriage. Their ultimate aim is to secure their own economic futures through purchase of property. Notes. |
