Abstract:There are two process verbs in Amharic, honä, and alä, 'become'. As process verbs they have an identical function. Their distinct phonological shapes may by syntactically determined from the kind of constituents with which the process verbs occur. The two process verbs honä and alä have only a grammarical function. The lexical meaning of the verbals is entirely expressed by the verbals which are generated as sister constituents of the process verbs. Bibliogr., fig., notes.
