Abstract:Using the pronunciation of a Shewan informant and the vocubulary of the 'Vocabulary-Vocabulaire' (Dire-Daoua, Ethiopia, Imprimerie St. Lazare, 1956), the author compiled a list of Amharic phonemes from lexicon. The basis of compilation was by CV combinations in initial, medial and final positions with the aim of looking for patterns such as occurrence of palatal consonants with particular vowels. Because frequencies in lexicon and text will obviously be quite different, the author also prepared a second table of frequencies based oh texts. Tab.
