| Abstract: | This paper attempts a socio-linguistic appraisal of what should be called slangs and colloquialisms (SACS) in Igbo. The pre-occupation of modern Igbo language studies with other matters - like orthography, standardized writing conventions, evolution of Standard Igbo, technical vocabulary, pedagogical grammars and graded texts for use in schools, and sufficient creative literature, etc. - have prevented people from focusing attention on the phenomenon of modern or contemporary Igbo usage and evolution. In the first part of the paper the author attempts a definition of the Igbo SACS. In the second part a sample word-list of some SACS, slang and colloquial expressions, is given. The third part presents some general comments about SACS and lexical evolution in the Igbo language. Ref. |
