Abstract:Cameroon is by law a bilingual country. French and English are taught there as compulsory subjects in alll the post-primary institutions and both are being systematically introduced into the primary school curriculum, the present government's long term objective being the production of bilingual citizens within the framework of English and French. This study sets out, first and foremost, to determine the negative influence of French writing habits on English as far as Francophone learners of English are concerned. Purposes of this study: 1. To find out whetter the French graphic system interferes with the informants' efforts to acquire and use English acceptably. 2. To determine types of graphic interferences. 3. To verify R. Lado's assertion (.Linguistics Across Culture, Ann Arbor, 1957) that similar structures (i.e. in the NL. and FL) are easy to learn since they can be transferred and may function satisfactorily.
