Abstract: | The years 1917 to 1920 constituted a period of considerable militancy amongst black workers and, to some extent, the urban black petty bourgeoisie, which culminated in the African mineworkers' strike of 1920. In the period immediately following several institutions and groups were created in response to this militancy. Key amongst these institutions were the Joint Councils for Bantu and Europeans founded in 1921 as a direct result of American intervention. This paper shows how culture and entertainment were also used as auxiliary forces in this context of 'defusing Native passions'. Notes. |
