Abstract:Diplomatic and political relations between the Maghrib and the Western Sudan in the nineteenth century are not well known or as yet properly studied. For example, B.G. Martin, in 'Kanem, Bornu and the Fazzan, notes on the political history of a trade route' (Jl. Afr. Hist., 10(1969), 1, p. 15-27) indicates the scanty and patchy nature of the knowledge of the cultural, political and commercial relations between the Mediterranean littoral of Tripoli or Libya and the Chad region or Bornu. Lack of good knowledge of the relations between these two regions has led A. Adu Boahen in 'Britain, the Sahara, and the Western Sudan 1788-1861 (Oxford, 1964)' to declare that the rulers of Tripoli and Bornu were 'on very intimate terms' in the period 1818-25. Particular aim of this paper is to show that Boahen's assertion misses the true picture of the political relationship between Tripoli and Bornu in early nineteenth century. Secondly, this paper wants to contribute towards the improvement of the knowledge and understanding of inter-state political relations in pre-colonial Africa. Notes.
