Abstract:Following up the colloquia held at Niamey (oral sources of African history) and at Timbuktu (written sources) the Ouagadougou meeting, an U.N.E.S.C.O. initiative, had the task to list the problems of collecting oral traditions and to consider possible solutions in connection with national and international research plans. As most of the countries represented belonged to the West African region only the problems of historical research in West Africa were discussed. The final report listed the priorities for projects and proposed a number of resolutions. It was proposed that the Centre voltaïque de la recherche scientifique in Ouagadougou should set up various historical card-indexes (for topological, ethnological, anthropological names, former cities and states, historical personalities), and should publish a bilingual information bulletin on historical research in West Africa. A further proposal was for special efforts to be made in collecting the oral traditions of certain groups with specific social and economic functions.
