Abstract:The aim of this article is to reflect on some of the field methods for collecting and processing oral data for the reconstruction of African history. (The reflection is based on the A.'s fieldwork in Bunyoro between 1967 and 1971) After a short description of the social and political structure of the tribe, the following topics are discussed: the best method of recording tradition - the question of proficiency in the language of the informants - the role of the interpreter - private and group testimonies. Notes, appendices (questionnaires).
