| Abstract: | None of the Arab tribes of the Northern Sudan is ethnically homogeneous, and each of them contains elements of diverse origin. In accounts of the historical fusion of such tribal elements little attention has been paid to the social and political significance of this process. Instead, the emphasis has been on a search for the ancestry of the various subdivisions that make up a given tribe today. In the present brief sketch of the early history of the Kababish tribe the author gives a summary of what is known of their political structure during the 18th and 19th centuries. References; map. |
