Abstract: | Though a discussion of certain aspects of Uthman's ideas and teaching cannot be undertaken seriously until much more progress has been made with the editing and translation of the large body of his writings - as well as the many works of his brother Abdullah, his son Muhammed Bello, and their contemporaries, which throw light on his teaching - the material already easily available makes clear what an interesting person Uthman, not only as a Scholar and teacher, but also as a reformer, was, and how important his influence on the course of West African history has been.
