Abstract:Elections have been held in six of the Bantu Homelands of South Africa. Although in most cases these were not contested on a party political basis, the formation of political parties followed soon after the elections in almost all the Homelands, This article gives a review of the election issues as well as the differing policies adopted by the political parties concerned. There are 13 major political parties in the Homelands. In three of them - Gazankulu, Swazi and Basotho-Qwaqwa - political parties; have not yet been formed. At least two parties were operating in the Transkei, Bophuthatswana, the Ciskei and Venda. There were also two parties in both Lewoba and KwaZulu, but these re-cently decided to merge. No elections had been held in KwaZulu yet. Sections: The constitutional background - The Transkei - The other Homelands (Bophuthatswana; The Ciskei; Lebowa; Venda; Gazankulu; KwaZulu) - Evaluation.
