Abstract:Paper read by the First Vice-President of Tanzania, Mr. Aboud Jumbe on behalf of the President, Mwalimu J.K. Nyerere, at the University of Khartoum as part of Sudan's 17th Anniversary of Independence in January, 1973. Nyerere's address answers the following questions: Why did Tanzania choose Socialism to the rejection of Capitalism? How strong is the case for Socialism as the path to development of the new nations of the Third World? Nyerere's conclusion: 'In practice Third World nations cannot become developed capitalist societies without surrendering the reality of their freedom and without accepting a degree of inequality between their citizens which would deny the moral validity of our independence struggle'.
