| Abstract: | A negotiated agreement to end a civil war when military victory is not in clear sight for either side is a rare event indeed. In addition the Addis Ababa treaty of 1972 provided a new basis for southern political life within a united Sudan and thus provided the basis for harmoniously resolving the tempestuous relationships between north and south that had existed for more than a century. Fuller understanding of what made these compromises possible and what obstacles had to be overcome in order to reach the conference table can help to explain this achievement. Notes. |
