Abstract: | The Rokel River region (Sierra Leone), strategically located and closely associated with the British-sponsored Freetown Colony, underwent far-reaching changes in the latter half of the nineteenth century. The author examines the peculiarities of the area and the major forces at work: the Freetown Colony, which by the end of the century was the only effective power in the territory; the so-called professional warriors; and the many small, competing chiefdoms, very jealous of one another and violently opposed to any idea of subordination.
