Abstract: | Analyses the actions of certain prominent rulers in Bumpe Country in Sierra Leone in order to show how African societies adjusted to the external pressures stemming from the impact of the West in the period prior to the protectorate (Sierra Leone became a protectorate in 1896). This study focuses largely on politics and missions, although as trade formed an indispensable part of the whole some mention of it is necessary. Conclusion: this study of the superimposition of a colonial framework over the African social system in Bumpe country indicates that as the traditional and modern systems coalesced, traditional patterns of action took on modern functions.
