Abstract: | Throughout Nasir's regime there has been a different domestic attitude toward communism as an ideology from that displayed in international affairs. Cairo has cultivated relations with all wings of international communism; but Nasir's left is of his own making, it is not to be shared with political opponents or foreign friends. The author discusses Nasir's system: a regimen of nationalization, land redistribution and income limitation, and employee (as well as state) participation in industry has been inaugurated. The press has been taken over and is under the control of government censors. The educational system has been reorganized. The entire political and economic system has undergone a tremendous centralization. The author ends with an attempt to appraise what the Egyptians themselves think about communism. To do this he examines some offical vomments on communism and its ideology, especially an article published in Aug. 1961 in al-Ahram by its editor Muh. H. Haikal. |
