Abstract: | The role of international trade unionism in the development of black trade unionism in South Africa is a subject that has received little attention. This article evaluates activities of the International Metalworker's Federation (IMF) in South Africa and traces how the comfortable imperial relationship between the IMF and its local craft affiliates (the established unions) was challenged by the emerging unions in the 1970s. The IMF South African Coordinating Council was to provide a lever and a platform for the beleaguered emerging unions, enabling them to establish a common position on certain key issues. As a result the Council reflected the major struggles between the established and emerging unions between 1974 and 1980. Notes. |
