Abstract:Using data obtained through a sample survey of informal sector repair and manufacturing enterprises (leather working, calabash carving, weaving, tailoring, radio and T.V. repair, and automobile repair) of Oyo and Ede towns of south-western Nigeria, the author discusses the factors influencing entry into the apprenticeship system in the craft segment of the informal sector in medium-sized towns of Nigeria. He also examines some of the procedures involved in the recruitment process, as well as various characteristics of the apprentices themselves, such as age, education, motivation and the nature of their contract. - Fig., notes, ref., tab.
