Abstract:This paper discusses the financing of housing by the Tanzania Housing Bank. Part 1: Outline of the state of Urban housing in Tanzania indicating the magnitude of the housing problem; examination of the construction industry. Part 2: A statement of Tanzania's urban housing policy; examination of the role of the Tanzania Housing Bank. It is argued that provision of finance cannot be relied upon to solve the urban housing problem. This problem can best be solved by a mass production of low-cost housing by the public sector. The houses would then be distributed to urban dwellers at a reasonable rent. Notes, tables.
