| Abstract: | This article considers to what extent and in what ways labour migrants responded as wage-labourers during the period 1904-1926. It analyses the factors which conditioned the manner in which labour migrants came to experience wage-labour and how, in order to control labour recruitment, large employers established early in 1926 a semi-official recruiting monopoly, the precursor of SWANLA.
