| Abstract: | This essay is concerned with variations in labor migration rates and the attendant social formations producing and arising from these variations in a specific area: Ovamboland, which is the most important labor reservoir in Namibia. The problem is viewed in a wider embedded context within a historical perspective. The author argues that migration rate variations can best be seen in terms of the changing cultural ecology of the area. Migration is seen as an act of compulsion. The first part of this paper is concerned with the 'demand' situation and the impact of the overarching colonial superstructure. The second part considers the supply side by examining conditions in the sending area and the interaction between these two forces. Crucial area of analysis is on the implications of the conscious acts of avoidance of labor migration. Notes, tables. |
