Abstract:After the sections - 1. Extent, occupations and earnings, 2. The Basotho migrant miner, 3. Causes of migration, 4. Economic implications (Introduction; Direct effects on production; Local impact of migrant earnings), 5. Control of migration and efficiency in resource allocation, 6. The future of migrant labour employment in South Africa - there are some conclusions, i.a.: 1. The primary reason for the great outward flow of manpower remains that of insufficient domestic opportunities for generating a reasonable income when compared with those prospects existing in S. Africa; 2. Temporary continuation of migrant labour opportunities in S.A. is essential if the present standard of living is to be maintained and if violent political upheaval is to be avoided. There is some future scope for Basotho in S.A. mine employment especially in coal, manganese, uranium and diamonds. However, the present situation must be regarded only as a temporary palliative.
