Abstract:The important questions confronting historians today, lie as much in the realms of social philosophy as in that of social science. Intensive historical studies of African economies will yield empirical data which can be applied to the questions posed by planners and social philosophers. The study of the historical experience of migrant workers from Njombe District in southern Tanzania illustrates that values of social cohesion and village ties have remained strong among peasants in southern Tanzania, even those who have worked for many years on distant sisal estates. During their participation in the development of Tanzania's sisal industry, Njombe's migrant laborers have maintained concrete social relationships with their families and village-mates both at home and at work. This strength and persistence of social orientation, even among a very mobile segment of the peasant population, became a base for Nyerere's Ujamaa. Ref., notes.
