Abstract:In the 1920s, when the British government developed an interest in education in the southern Sudan, four missionary societies were already at work there. One of these societies, the mission of the United Presbyterian Church of North America, had no formal school system in the south before 1924. It did, nonetheless, have a well-devleloped Industrial department, which was the main focus of educational activity whithin the mission. This paper traces the development of the Industrial Department under the direction of the American Mission in the Upper Nile Province of the southern Sudan. It includes a introductory treatment of the origins of Presbyterian missionary activities in the Sudan; an analysis of the Presbyterian conception of industrial education and of the relations between mission and government and its effect on the education program.
