Abstract: | Summary report of the Conference on Co-operatives and Rural Development in East Africa, Uppsala, 20-23 April 1970, sponsored and financially supported by the Scandinavian Institute of African Studies in Uppsala and the Swedish Federation of Co-operatives. The conference dealt with the social, political, economic, and managerial aspects of co-operation. Points of discussion i.a.: prerequisites for co-operative development; the effect of extensive government intervention in the affairs of the co-operatives, which has been made necessary by financial mismanagement. The papers and a summary of the discussions are to be published towards the end of 1970. The International Co-operative Alliance, the Nordic Assistance Project, and the Scandinavian Institute of African Studies will arrange a follow-up seminar somewhere in East Africa early in 1971. |
