Abstract:In spite of the government's effort to encourage cooperative activities in farming, only about 10 per cent of total adult farmers in Oyo state belong to one type of cooperative society or the other. In 1936, only two settlements within Oyo state had registered cooperative societies. By 1972, cooperative societies had spread to about forty-three settlements within the state. The spread of cooperative activities in the state has provided a system of information nodes from which new seeds and cultivation practices are transmitted to the farmers. There are distinct differences in the farming characteristics of cooperative and non-cooperative farmers involving differences in the spatial organization of farmlands that deserve very close study with a view to encouraging efficient cooperative farming. An empirical investigation has been conducted within selected settlements in part of Western Nigeria (Oyeleye, 1976). The main objective of this study is to examine the differences in the farming characteristics of cooperative and non-cooperative farmers based on the use of multivariate analysis. Fig., ref., tab.
