Abstract:The Ngoni-Matengo Co-operative Marketing Union Limited and the Primary Societies affiliated to it, founded in 1936, is the second oldest co-operative movement in Tanzania. The NMCMU was formed primarily to market the tobacco grown in the Songea district. In the late 1930s it started handling the sale of coffee. By the 1950s, it had assumed responsibility for marketing a variety of other crops. Because the marketing of tobacco has always been the main function of the NMCMU and because it is on tobacco that most information is available, this study concentrates on that crop. In particular is examined why people produced tobacco in order to explain why annual levels of production varied so much over the years. The period before 1954 receives more attention than that after, due to limited information available for the later years. Notes, tables, map.
