Abstract: | This article is based on research undertaken in 1971-72. Following the policy of ujamaa vijijini the marketing-based cooperative societies are supposed to transform themselves into multi-purpose production-oriented cooperative or to give way to such cooperatives. The analysis, therefore, refers to a cooperative set-up and setting, which have been undergoing drastic changes in recent years. The main text deals with the marketing primary societies which are affiliated to a cooperative union. The cooperative unions and the unaffiliated societies are dealt with in appendices. Sections: Introduction - Number of societies and availability of accounts - Value and volume of crops handled by the societies - The economic result of the year - Efficiency of cooperative societies - The financial position of the societies - Concluding remarks. Appendix A.: The cooperative unions. Appendix B.: The unaffiliated societies. Note, tables, diagram. |
