Abstract:Although there is a considerable volume of published material on co-operative movements in most African states, with the exception of the short article by C. Roberts, 'Co-operatives and community development in Rhodesia (Rhodesian Community Development Review, 3 (1972), 3, p. 12-16) which is basically duplicated in 'Development in Rhodesian Tribal Areas: An Overview' written by A.J.B. Hughes (Tribal Areas of Rhodesia Research Foundation, Salisbury, 1974), nothing is readily available on Rhodesia. This paper is intended to fill part of this gap, at least in a preliminary manner. In the first part the author examines briefly the development and structure of the co-operative movement, particularly as affects Africans in Rhodesia; in the second part the author considers one particular primary society (Msengezi Producers' Co-operative Society) with which he has had extensive dealings, in an attempt to particularise some of the issues and problems which influence the concept of co-operation in actual practice. Ref., notes, tables, diagram.
